HISTORY OF SSMTF
How it All Started
The Sault Ste. Marie Touch Football League has been in operation since 1974.
The league was founded by a group of local football enthusiasts, spearheaded by Matt Thorp, who was a City employee at the time in the Community Services Department.

The Matt Thorp Memorial Trophy
This trophy is dedicated to the memory of Matt Thorp, Recreation Assistant for the City of Sault Ste. Marie from 1972 to 1985, who was the founder of the City Touch Football League in 1974. Matt captained his own team and participated as a player from 1974 until his very untimely death on October 5, 1985.
This trophy was dedicated in his honour by all the members of the league, and it presented each year to the A-Division Playoff Champion.
